Elementary School

For elementary schoolers, Comprehensive Consent focuses on skill-building. When a student has consent skills, they can reliably and confidently tune in to their body’s cues, ask for permission, communicate their boundaries and interests, handle rejection with grace, and take accountability for their missteps.

Introducing consent and body boundaries to kids as social-emotional skills allows them to practice consent when the stakes are low so that they’re prepared when the stakes are high. This allows them to internalize consent as a value that supports kindness and respect, rather than an awkward or intimidating legality that they have to get right. • The Mindfulness for Consent Skills curriculum contains 14 distinct lessons that are comprised of exercises and reflection questions to help young students develop awareness around their thoughts, feelings, breath, and body, and explore the ways these elements impact communication and consent.

  • In the foundational 3-session series, students learn about consent an ongoing social-emotional practice that respects a person’s personal and bodily autonomy.

Session 1: Students learn that consent is about more than “getting a yes.” Students will be guided through mindfulness exercises, activities, and conversation that engages them to, not only think about, but to feel, the importance of respecting others’ boundaries.

Session 2: Students begin to learn the different components of practicing consent and the multiple skills required to practice consent, on all sides of an interaction. Students will be challenged to think about the barriers to practicing consent.

Session 3: Students learn the last few components of consent and practice some of the skills they’ve learned. Students will then be guided in a conversation on how social dynamics like age, authority, popularity, gender, etc. impact consent in our world today.

  • Families that understand and value consent as a life practice are invaluable allies in helping children develop their consent competence.

Comprehensive Consent offers sessions to parents and caregivers that support them in understanding what it means to teach consent to kids and how they can reinforce the value of consent in the home.

While we are all social learners, children’s brains are especially ripe for picking up on the habits and behaviors of those around them. When the adults in students’ lives (yourself included) understand, value, and commit to reinforcing consent skills, we can prepare them with the foundation they need to deeply understand their body belongs to them and that navigating body boundaries requires conversation.

  • Whether we realize it or not, we are always teaching our students. They observe our behavior, hear our conversations, and take note of our decisions. When a school culture doesn’t reflect the values being preached in the classroom, we undermine these important initiatives and reinforce the exact habits we’re trying to help students avoid.

Comprehensive Consent offers schools a 90-minute presentation to support their understanding of consent as a dynamic interpersonal practice and gives them the tools to successfully apply what they learn to their everyday interactions with students and colleagues.

Workshops are offered virtually and in-person throughout the greater NYC area. Custom workshops are available upon request.

Testimonials

“Ms. Casper joined our community to support our ongoing DEIB work with the topic of consent as part of supporting an inclusive community where all of our members feel they belong.  The session was engaging and informative and faculty and staff continued conversations around the topic long after her time with us that morning.  I highly recommend her work in support of not only students but also adults.”

“Sarah gave two talks to our school community. Sarah is so down-to-earth, and she shares her knowledge in such a personal way. She gave a bunch of real-life examples and scenarios. I highly recommend reaching out to Sarah and setting up a workshop at your own school!”
